RICHARD WRIGHT LITERARY AWARDS

Memphis Public Libraries will host our very first book awards honoring local authors who have excelled in various categories of writing and publishing. If you are not familiar with Richard Wright's connection to Memphis, he lived here during parts of his teenage years. He tried to check out books to read from the Cossitt Library but could not do so because of segregation laws and practices prohibiting Blacks from entering and using certain establishments. A White man allowed Wright to use his library card under the guise that Wright was checking the books out for him and not Wright. The experience was captured in Wright's autobiography Black Boy. After that, Wright became an iconic literary figure.  Wright embodies so much of what it means to be a fighter, a writer, and a Memphian, and we couldn't have selected a better person to whom to name the awards.
