LIBRARY CARD SIGN-UP MONTH

Get your new Memphis Grizzlies Libary Card for National Library Card Sign-up Month. This month, two new cards will be released, meaning Memphis Public Libraries will have four Grizzlies-themed cards for you to choose from. Plus, we are launching a PRIDE library card contest. You can submit your work for consideration in the Memphis Public Library's Library Card Contest. Contestants will frame their art around the theme of Local Pride. Please check memphislibrary.org to enter or for more details.

Do you want to learn how to make a podcast? The Podbox Memphis Festival is on September 30. Want to learn how to cook? Take advantage of Chef Eli's monthly cooking demo, and stop by Thursday evenings for BYOV ( Bring your Vinyl Night) record-spinning sessions.

Come and celebrate the 50th anniversary of Hip-Hop at the Hip-Hop Community Takeover on September 16 from 11:00 am-1:00 pm. Memphis rap legend Al Kapone will be at the Whitehaven Branch for a panel discussion on Hip-Hop.

Teen Arts Fest: Call to Artists

 If you are a teen artist and want to submit artwork to be a part of our Teen Art Exhibition, applications will be accepted from September 5 to September 30. Show off your art. Winners could take home as much as $500. The application will be open on Sep. 6th on the library website!

Our Front Porch Music Series continues in September. Exceptional guitarist Peter Fletcher has two performances at the Raleigh and Benjamin L Hooks Central Library. Fletcher is in high demand and plays at venues across the USA, including Carnegie Hall.

MPL PRIDE KICKOFF 2023

We are kicking off the first weekend in September, celebrating LGBTQIA+ PRIDE, The Proud Out Loud 80's Dance party on September 1 is an over 21 event, and registration is required. Dance the night away and enjoy free food, drinks, live trivia, and musical entertainment. The next day, September 2, is MPL Pride Kickoff. This family-friendly event includes non-profit resources, Rainbow Family Story Time, crafts, and free book giveaways.

Are you on Medicaid or SSI? Does your child receive reduced or free lunch? You may get a $ 30-a-month discount on your internet through the Affordable Connectivity Program. Go to memphislibrary.org for more information or to see if you qualify.

Do you want to go camping but don't have a tent or need a Karaoke machine for a party? How about a big screen for movie night, items to explore nature or yard games? Our new Libary of Things, Joy Collection, has five kits to check out and have fun.

Are you pregnant or have a new baby? The My Baby For Me program at the Crenshaw Branch Library is a monthly program sponsored by the Memphis NAACP that offers free resources for soon-to-be and new mothers.

The Black Child Book Fair Tour is returning to the Benjamin L Hooks Central Library on September 30. This popular, inclusive book sale promotes books with positive images and stories of Black children and Black life. 

PIRATE'S RAID

Ahoy Mateys! Celebrate Talk Like A Pirate Day all month long with the Memphis Public Libraries! Visit various MPL branches for treasure hunts, arts & crafts, mermaid story times, tavern food, pirate tech, and more! 

CONTINUING EDUCATION

5 fridays of jazz

Continuing Education

Registration is underway for our free Adult Continuing Education classes. MPL offers a variety of business, educational, STEM, and self-help intensive classes during October and November. Classes are sponsored by the Memphis Library Foundation and designed for those interested in learning or making themselves more marketable in the workforce. Courses offered include graphic design, American sign language, publishing, natural hairstyling, and many more.

If you need a legal question answered, attorneys offer free legal sessions four times this month at Memphis Public Libraries. Our Saturday Legal Clinic takes place on September 9. We also have clinics focused on housing issues and Elder concerns.

Are you interested in learning how to use your new phone? Do you need to improve your computer skills? Are you interested in learning about operating a small business? We have group programs and sessions where you can meet with a librarian individually to get help.

From Zumba Classes to line dancing and aerobics to family yoga, we can keep you moving at MPL. In addition, check out our adult and children's nutrition classes offered this month.

Knitting, sewing, painting, stitching, clay jewelry, perler bead fun, and much more! If you want to get crafty and make something cool, we can help.

Did you know you can take LinkedIn Learning classes for FREE with your library card? Are you interested in photography? How about upping your computer skills or learning a new language? There are more than 16,000 online courses you can access.

Are you interested in joining a book club? Look no further! We offer book clubs by location, day, time, type of books (fiction and nonfiction), and categories such as African-American or sports-themed books. If you want to start a club, we can help with that, too.

BANNED BOOKS WEEK

For this year's Banned Books Week, join MLF on Tuesday, October 3, from 5:30-7:30 pm in a delightful evening with esteemed author and NPR book critic Maureen Corrigan as she discusses her work on the history of banned books. There will be a taco bar; specialty cocktails, beer, wine, and non-alcoholic beverages; and a conversation with this expert on the culture of book-banning.
