Melrose Ribbon Cutting

Join us for the Orange Mound Library Grand Opening. It sat silent for decades. Now, the old Melrose High School has been given a new lease on life and transformed into a vibrant community hub. Be there for this historic moment. Join us at 842 Dallas Street on April 26 at 3 p.m. We will have genealogy programs and activities for kids. Bring your school photos and mementos to digitize into the Memphis Public Library's digital archives.  If you can't attend this event, the new Orange Mound Library will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on April 27.

Join us for Hattiloo Threatre at Memphis Public Libraries. 
Hattiloo Theatre will perform a play based on the book Mufaro's Beautiful Daughter for children at four MPL branches beginning in April. Hattiloo is the only Black theatre in Memphis. Join us for live, free performances.

Join us in the courtyard at Cossitt for open mic night in April. Expect an unforgettable evening featuring live music, poetry, performances, and mouthwatering dishes from our cozy café, Dos Hermanos Kitchen. Feel free to participate, or you can enjoy the show!

Are you looking for a place to play Pickleball? We will offer open play on the Benjamin L Hooks Central Library courts on most Sundays in April from 2 pm to 4 pm. Open play will occur on newly painted courts in the parking lot area! If you are curious about this game, come check it out.

Memphis Public Libraries are giving out free solar eclipse glasses for the upcoming solar eclipse on April 8. Glasses can be picked up at any MPL branch while supplies last. Check the MPL website to see which branches still have glasses available.

BOOKSTOCK

Bookstock is back on April 6 from 11 am - 3 pm at the Benjamin L Hooks Central Library! This year's Memphis Area Authors' Festival is expected to be our best yet. In addition to celebrating 60 local authors, we will have cultural performances, children's activities, music, book giveaways, and more. Our Keynote Speakers this year are Avery Cunningham and Dr. Sidney Thompson. Cunningham is a Memphis resident whose debut novel, the Mayor of Maxwell Street, is a huge success. Memphian Dr. Thompson is the author of The Bass Reeves Trilogy, an award-winning historical fiction that was the inspiration for LAWMEN.

The No More Silence Foundation is offering its Cope and Heal Camp for adult survivors of sexual abuse. The camp is designed to provide education and support in a safe space. Skills and activities include safe reporting and prevention tools, coping strategies, and more.

FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY SPRING BOOKSALE

Mark your calendar! The Memphis Friends of the Library Book Sale begins on April 18 with the Friends of the Library member preview. It opens to the public on April 19 and runs all weekend. We have thousands of books for sale at bargain prices. Plus, magazines, records, DVDs, CDs, and more. The money raised will help support Memphis Public Libraries programs.

This Forensic Science event is for tweens. Put yourself in the shoes of a forensic scientist and help Professor Chet Redwood attempt to solve the mystery of who stole a rare plant from Australia that was being stored in MPL's University Greenhouse. Show up and solve the mystery!

Do you love Star Wars? If so, we need your help building a giant Lego Millennium Falcon. On April 6, we will continue building the 7,500-piece creation. The build began last month, and we plan to complete it in May. It is an all-ages event at the Benjamin L Hooks Central Library.

Do you need help with your tablet, laptop, or smart device? You can receive one-on-one assistance accessing the library's digital services. Customers get help on a first-come, first-served basis. Ensure your device is charged, and bring your usernames and passwords with you. 

SPRINGTIME TALKS AT THE LIBRARY

Do you know when to plant? What will make your garden bloom? Join us for Springtime Talks at the Seed Library. Master gardeners in our community will teach you how to nurture your nature for a healthy garden and ecosystem. While you are here, remember to pick up free seeds from the library.

Join Memphis legend Booker T. Leigh to learn all about soil health and how to test it! If you've ever wondered how much nitrogen your soil has or why your blueberries aren't growing, this program is for you. Booker will present on April 5 and 20 at the Benjamin L Hooks Central Library.

Creative Sharing is a series of workshops to support local artists and inspire the community in their creative journeys. It is for poets, spoken word artists, songwriters, rap artists, and anyone interested in learning. There will also be an open mic for artists to share their talent.

 901 PERSONAL FINANCE WEEK

Join us for 901 Personal Finance Week from April 8 to 11, 2024.
This year, we want to help you be smart with your money. Every day, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., we will focus on different issues, from personal finance questions and credit repair to retirement and Medicare. Classes will be at the Benjamin L Hooks Central Library. There is also a virtual option. Go to the MPL event calendar for more information, or get to the virtual link.
